What is ECDSA?

Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm

ECDSA is a digital-signature scheme based on elliptic-curve cryptography. It is used by several blockchain systems, including Ethereum's transaction signing format. Correct implementations must protect private keys and verify the signature against the intended message and protocol context.

A valid ECDSA signature is not a policy decision. Applications still need to decode the signed transaction or message, validate its domain and replay protections, recover or check the expected signer, and compare the requested action with authorization rules.

The curve, hash construction, serialization, and signature malleability rules are protocol-specific. Use maintained cryptographic libraries and follow the format required by the chain or message standard.

Definitions are educational and general. Nothing here is financial, legal or tax advice, and regulatory descriptions summarise frameworks that change — check the current rules for your jurisdiction before relying on them.
