What is Fractional shares?

A fractional share is a portion of a single share of stock. Fractional investing lets someone place an order in currency terms — a fixed dollar amount — rather than in whole shares, which makes high-priced securities accessible at any budget.

Fractional positions are held in book-entry form by the broker rather than registered directly, which is why fractional shares generally cannot be transferred between brokers and are liquidated on account transfer instead.

Corporate actions are where fractional accounting gets demanding. Dividends must be apportioned and may be subject to withholding; splits, mergers and spin-offs each change the position in ways that have to be recorded per lot if cost basis is to remain correct. A ledger that tracks lots individually is the difference between a defensible tax position and an approximation.

Definitions are educational and general. Nothing here is financial, legal or tax advice, and regulatory descriptions summarise frameworks that change — check the current rules for your jurisdiction before relying on them.
