What is GENIUS Act?

The GENIUS Act is US federal legislation establishing a regulatory framework for payment stablecoins, covering who may issue them, what reserves must back them, and how holders may redeem them.

The significance is that it defines a category. Before a federal framework, payment stablecoins were regulated through a patchwork of state money-transmitter licensing and enforcement actions, which made the compliant path ambiguous rather than difficult.

For platforms, the operative question becomes whether a given stablecoin is issued by an authorised entity — an allowlist decision that has to be enforced in code rather than asserted in a policy document.

Definitions are educational and general. Nothing here is financial, legal or tax advice, and regulatory descriptions summarise frameworks that change — check the current rules for your jurisdiction before relying on them.
