What is Key rotation?
Key rotation replaces a cryptographic key and updates the systems that trust or use it. It limits how long a key remains active, but it does not revoke signatures already made, recover secrets already copied, or automatically update every dependent integration.
A rotation plan needs key ownership, overlap, activation and retirement times, rollback handling, dependent-service updates, and an audit trail. A suspected compromise may require immediate revocation and incident response instead of a routine rotation schedule.
Test the procedure in a controlled environment so applications can move to the replacement key without accepting stale credentials longer than necessary or losing access to required recovery functions.
