What is Payment intent?

A payment intent is a server-side record of what a payer is expected to pay, to whom, in which asset, and under what conditions. It describes a requested payment lifecycle; creating or approving an intent does not prove that funds were received or settled.

A useful intent has a stable identifier, exact amount and unit, accepted asset and network, recipient, expiration policy, and an explicit state. The server should bind it to the order and authenticated merchant. Receipt verification is a separate step that compares observed transfer evidence with those terms.

Keep the intent immutable or version its changes. If a payer changes networks, recipients, or amounts, create a new authorized intent rather than silently rewriting the conditions of an existing request.

Definitions are educational and general. Nothing here is financial, legal or tax advice, and regulatory descriptions summarise frameworks that change — check the current rules for your jurisdiction before relying on them.
